By the time Mrs. Nicky finds me in the bathroom, I am holding a wet paper towel over my knee and breathing normally.
âSo, not a fan of the rumba, then?â She leans against the wall and crosses her arms. Sheâs blocking the only exit, and I have to fight the instinct to push her like I did Well.
âNo, maâam. Itâs not that. Iâve just got a headache.â I point to the concussion bump, still yellow and purple on my temple.
âAhhh.â She leans forward. âA bit ghoulish.â She studies my head and then my skinned knee. âIâd like to see the other guy.â She comes closer, earrings and silver bracelets jangling. I back up until I feel the paper towel dispenser poke into my spine. She cocks her head at me.
âListen, Lou, Iâm going to be straight with you. Theaterâs not for the faint of heart.â
Sheâs giving me an out. She can see Iâm not like everybody else. Iâm weird in a way that isnât theater-kid cool. Iâm not eccentric. Sheâs right. Iâm âfaint of heart.â
I picture everyone dancing and laughing while I stand in this bathroom with a stupid paper towel on my leg. Itâs not fair. I donât want to be this way. Ten minutes ago I would have taken Mrs. Nickyâs chance to drop the class in a heartbeat. But now, Iâm⦠What am I? Iâm angry.
âIâll be out in a minute.â
For a split second she looks pleased, like this is what sheâd been after all along. But then itâs gone, so I canât be sure. âAll right, then. Letâs do this.â She throws open the door but turns back to say, âIâll give you a hint. Dance number two is a bluesy number. Think of all your heartâs aches, those bumps and bruises of the soul, and let them propel you across the dance floor.â Then sheâs gone.
So, after apologizing to Well for âneeding some air,â which he doesnât even question because heâs too busy dancing, I slide my feet from side to side in the corner of the dance studio. For exactly two minutes and thirteen seconds, I shuffle to the tune of a very sad trumpet. I am, at least for now, a theater kid.
